Recently named BroadwayWorld’s “Favorite Local Theatre,” Elmwood Community Playhouse is an intimate 99-seat theater where every seat is a good one, tickets are affordable, and great restaurants are just a short walk away. And it’s in Nyack!
Each year, Elmwood produces a full season of mainstage productions ranging from classic comedies and musicals to thought-provoking works, such as this season’s The Cake and The Lifespan of a Fact.
Those who experience one of Elmwood’s outstanding productions for the first time are often surprised to learn that Elmwood is a non-equity theater. But it soon becomes clear: professional quality is the hallmark of Elmwood shows and this quality draws audiences in from around the tristate area.
Elmwood has received some of its most glowing reviews from Broadway luminaries. Tony Award-winner Rupert Holmes declared Elmwood’s production of his musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood “a masterful rendition.” Tony Award-nominee Lucy Simon, composer of The Secret Garden, said Elmwood’s production of her work was “magical and breathtaking.” Three-time Tony Award-winner Jason Robert Brown had high praise for Elmwood’s production of his Songs for a New World, thanking the cast and creative team for taking such good care of his work!
Elmwood Community Playhouse is as proud of its community connections as it is of its professional connections. For more than seven decades, Elmwood has not only brought outstanding live theater to the community, but has actively sought ways to improve access to the arts in our community through scholarships, mentorships, workshops, and collaborations with other non-profits such as such as Music for Life Creative Arts Therapy and Nyack Art Collective.
During the Covid shutdown (the only time in the theater’s history when the stage was dark) Elmwood produced free outdoor Porch Stories events where the community could safely gather and enjoy much needed live entertainment.
Most recently, through a grant from the Orange and Rockland Community Partnership Program, Elmwood has added an open caption performance of each production.
